The Cottage

  • The Old Forge represents excellent value and a perfect self catering getaway. A high standard of restoration and conversion has been put into this Grade II listed former Forge, and it is right in the centre of Boxford.
  • Boxford was rated by The Times Travel Mag as one of the top 10 Villages in England and is a very beautiful Medieval Suffolk village nestled in the Box river valley.
  • The Old Forge is just perfect for a couple. What the cottage lacks in size it more than makes up for in elegance, style and romance factor.
  • This place is a big favourite for guests looking for an affordable but stylish place to get completely away from the stresses of city life for a few days.
  • You enter The Old Forge straight into the main room through the old coach doors where there is a cosy sofa and dining area with a fully equipped kitchen.
  • The room has Oak flooring, Oak beams and is furnished with period furniture. Up the lovely hand made stairs there is a really beautiful vaulted and beamed bedroom and a designer ensuite shower bathroom.
  • There has been some excellent Master Carpentry used to create the living areas and bring you up stairs and this with a careful eye for design and comfort gives the place a very stylish and relaxing feel - and being in Boxford it could hardly be better placed to enjoy the beautiful countryside and unique medieval hamlets and villages that dot this outstandingly beautiful area.

Please note: There is no washing machine in the cottage but the owner is happy to do the washing normally within 24 hours for a small fee of £3 per load.

The Location

  • Boxford is a particularly pretty Medieval village and it is a joy to walk around and marvel at all the ancient houses. see our Local Area page
  • In the centre is  the oldest shop in England which has a post office and a farm shop come deli in it, there is also a small garage selling petrol in the village which claims to be the oldest Garage in Europe ! Box ford also has an excellent butchers, a small general stores and beauty clinic, 3 great pubs and an excellent Coffee shop see website.
  • One of the pubs, which is called The Fleece, has its own brewery, a lovely all weather pub garden and a very pretty William Morris styled tea room, the pub serves meals.
  • Just across the road is The white Hart which also has a nice area outside to watch the world go by, the pub offers good food and has a very interesting history.
  • A previous owner of The White Hart was Tornado Smith, England’s very first Wall of Death daredevil rider who performed this highly dangerous feat in the 1920’s and 30’s with his pet Lioness ‘Briton’ sitting in the passenger seat. In the day it was not uncommon for villagers to meet Tornado taking his Lion for a walk through the Village and when she sadly died she was buried under the entrance to the pub.
  • More recently Guy Martin’s (of TV fame) trainer Ken Fox will be re-creating a bit of history by celebrating ‘The Wall of Death’ act in the pub car park.
  • There is a third pub a short stroll out of the village called The Hare and Hounds which does a good trade in honest  pub food see website
  • The official Cycle route passes through Boxford and our cottage map has an interesting circular route marked out on it for guests to explore this beautiful part of Suffolk by bike with some stops at our favourite pubs
  • There is a lovely Riverside Nature Reserve behind the cottages which can be reached by turning left out of the cottage and taking the next two left turns, there you will find is a footpath meandering down the hedgerow to the river valley where you come to Primrose Woods the wonderful Nature reserve walk along the River Box, Just over the hill at Polstead there are also some of Suffolks prettiest walks frm the church overlooking the steep river valley.
  • There is a map in the cottage with all the lovely walks marked on it, and all the best pubs!

Local Area

  • Hadleigh and Sudbury are the nearest small towns - both approximately 10 - 12 minutes away in a car. Lavenham, which is widely recognised as England's Best Preserved Medieval Village, is just a 15 minute drive away and Long Melford (where the Lovejoy TV series was filmed) is about the same distance.
  • The big Historic Towns like Bury St Edmunds, which is a really lovely place to visit, is about 30 minutes drive away. Colchester which is an ancient Roman Walled town and one stop away from London by train is about 25 minutes away
