Endeavour has lots of space and 3 double cabins (one en suite), plus an additional small double cabin in the stern, which is suitable for one adult or two children - this can booked online as an optional extra, so in total 6 adults + 2 children or 7 adults, there is also a sofa bed for emergencies - which can also be booked as an optional extra.

Pin Mill Sailing Barge

  • The historic Sailing Barge Onderneming (Endeavour), was built in 1895 and is now cleverly converted to include three double bedrooms, three bathrooms, two galleys and two lovely sitting areas.
  • An additional small traditional cabin in the stern has a double bunk, perfect for one adult or two children - this can be added to your booking in the online booking process.
  • The Endeavour is currently moored on a small jetty outside the famous Butt and Oyster pub at Pinmill. There is one dedicated car parking space for visitors staying on the Endeavour in this charming riverside hamlet.
  • More spaces are available just up the road or in the village of Chelmondiston nearby.
  • There are pretty walks in both directions along the riverside if you can ever prise yourself out of one of the best pubs in England.
  • The barge is warm and comfortable, with high ceilings, comfortable beds and 3 modern bathrooms one with a bath.
  • There are two BIG galleys (rooms to sit in, cook and eat). One is upstairs in what we call the Deck House, which has cooking facilities and lovely views over Pin Mill and up the river. The second galley (the Main Saloon) also has complete cooking facilities plus a sofa, rocking chairs and a woodburning stove.
  • Both these rooms have fridges, dishwashers and dining areas. There are two washer / dryers to complete the inventory.

... and did I mention the pull of the Butt and Oyster is just 50 yards away?!

The Location

  • Pin Mill is on the Shotley Peninsula and lies within the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is south of the Orwell Bridge and Ipswich is about 15 minutes away. Just down from the Orwell Bridge on the river Orwell - Ipswich is about 15 minutes up river.
  • The location is very pretty with woods and fields going straight down to the shoreline and the area is a haven for wildlife and a magnet for bird watchers, walkers and nature lovers.
  • Pin Mill is a picturesque little place, centred around Harry King's boatyard and the Butt and Oyster pub. There are a few houses set back from a green and a shop, and it has a lovely unspoilt feeling about as if nothing has much changed for 100 years. When you see the majestic Thames barges sailing up the river you can really get a feeling for how it was in those days.
  • Pin Mill was once a busy landing point for ship-borne cargo ships, a centre for the repair of Thames Barges and home to many small industries such as sail making.
  • The Suffolk coast has a long smuggling history, in which Pin Mill and the Butt and Oyster pub played a key part.
  • Pin Mill was where Arthur Ransome of Swallows and Amazon's fame wrote We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea and Secret Water. Ransome had his own boats built at Harry King's boatyard in Pin Mill and kept his yacht, the Selina King, at Pin Mill.
  • There are some useful recommendations of what is close to The Endeavour on The Suffolk Guide

Some fun activities

  • Apart from lounging out on the boat and watching the river traffic and Nature go by, you can also walk up or down the foreshore for miles, where there are some great opportunities to see lots of wildlike from seals to pretty wading birds, the walks go through woods, heathland and meadows and of course you have the wonderful Butt and Oyster just 50 yards from the pub when you return.
  • There is a lovely big lake and nature Reserve called Alton Water just 12 minutes away from Pin Mill which offers visitors lots of water activities like sailing, kayaking and rowing see this link.
  • You can find a bike hire shop at Alton Water and an 8 mile bike track going round the lake and Nature reserve, check out details on their website.
  • Anglian Water also manage the lovely Nature reserve and if you want to go fishing they will provide you with Fishing Lisenses, please see their website.
  • There is a Horse Riding Stables at the top of the lane where you you can ride along the penisular with great views over the river.
  • The official bike route goes past Pin Mill and round the Shotley Peninsular.
  • There are Ferries at the end of the Peninsular which will take you to Fexistow at the Languard Fort which contains a really good museum or over to Harwich.
  • We are working on some opportunities to go out sailing so just give us a call to find out the latest information!

I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you so much for a great stay on Endeavour this weekend. It was the perfect treat for my partners 50th and she loved it, as did her folks and kids. It was so nice, especially in this weather to sit in the top living space with the doors and windows open, with the wonderful natural habitat all around us - with a hint of seaweed of course, to remind us we were afloat - just fabulous. What an amazing pub next door, superb fish n chips! Will definitely be in touch to stay again. Many thanks.

  • Friday, 24th of February, 2017, Mark & Nadine:

  • Monday, 24th of October, 2016, Nikki & Richard:

It was an incredibly special experience to wake in the morning to the sun rising over the harbour, step onto the jetty and feel that we had really been out to sea! The hamlet of Pin Mill is picture perfect. We felt instantly part of the boat community despite our lack of actual sails. Picturesque dog walks in all directions - we didn't want to leave.

  • Monday, 24th of October, 2016, Jonathan, Amanda & Guy:

We've enjoyed a unique non sailing boat experience! Quite idyllic setting. We recommend cycling to Shotley marina (through the National Trust woods and hugging the shoreline - bit bumpy but beautiful all the way). Walking to Woolverstone marina then up the hill and back across the fields. Visiting Languard Fort (English Heritage, excellent audio tour and we could take the dog in!). Fascinating for history of the estuary area. Back again soon!

  • Friday, 21st of October, 2016, Jane & Jeff:

Thank you Denise for a great welcome, very cosy and relaxing time had by all 3 of us on the Endeavour (2 + dog!). Great walks, scenery and pub food and fun dodging the rising tide! Will be back again!

A thoroughly enjoyable time beginning with the very warm welcome from Denise. We loved the quirky atmosphere of the boat and it's location to the pub. Completely relaxing, peaceful and serene with no passing traffic noise. Good local walks but just enjoyed watching the birds and changing scenery as the tide ebbed and flowed. Loved it and will definitely return!!

  • Sunday, 9th of October, 2016, Jacqui & Laurence:

Wonderful walks from all directions from the door. Wonderful food and beer at the Butt & Oyster, topped off by a cosy nights sleep on Endeavour. A perfect get away from it all weekend, less than an hour from home! Thank you!
